After graduating with a B.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from The Ohio State University, Dr. Lewis began his professional career as a time study and process improvement analyst at Armco Steel in Middletown, Ohio. Later, he became a foundry superintendent at Walworth Steel Casting, responsible for all production operations and over 150 employees.

Dr. Lewis earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering, majoring in applied operations research, from The Ohio State University. Teaching and research of applied operations research to foundry operations became the focus of his research as a faculty member at The Ohio State University, Ohio University (visiting adjunct), and the University of Toledo (visiting adjunct). During this time, he taught courses related to applied operations research, manufacturing/foundry engineering, and CAD/CAM. With the help of many graduate students, he also conducted funded research and published over 20 publications related to applied operations research.

He eventually left academia and started a residential home construction business, a millwork business, and an engineering consulting firm. He eventually returned to professional practice in engineering, working at a large medical center, providing applied operations research (mathematical modeling, simulation of processes and statistical analysis) solutions.
