As infrastructure continues to age and new regulations are enforced, civil engineers are needed to manage projects rebuilding bridges, repairing roads, and upgrading levees and dams. Advances in technology and research enable civil engineers today to create longer-lasting solutions, and Russ College graduates are leading the country’s next generation of sustainable infrastructure.

Civil engineers are needed for the increasing number of renewable energy projects as well. Structural analysis of large-scale photovoltaic projects and evaluation of the ability of solar array support structures and buildings to tolerate stresses from wind, seismic activity, and other sources are essential to a project’s success and safety. For large-scale wind projects, civil engineers prepare road beds to handle large trucks that haul in turbines and prepare onshore and offshore sites to ensure that the turbines’ foundations will safely support them in expected environmental conditions.

Employment of civil engineers is projected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to grow from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations.
