This week, a potentially record-breaking transaction occurred in softball coaching. Patrick Murphy, who previously led the University of Alabama’s (UA’s) softball team, recently accepted a position with Louisiana State University (LSU) that will make him the highest-paid coach in the sport, The Gadsen Times reports.

Although this is good news for Murphy, many of the players from his old team are not happy.

“I’m a little bit upset and disappointed,” Kelly Kretschman, a two-time Olympian who played at UA from 1998-2001, told the news source. “Murphy was the face of Alabama softball for a long time, and for him to leave for another program, a program that’s a hated rival in the conference, it’s disappointing.”

However, LSU Sports reports that Murphy is joining a program that was previously coached by his mentor, Louisiana Hall of the Fame inductee, Yvette Girouard. Murphy will be joined by Alyson Habetz, Alabama’s associate head coach, who has been a member of his staff for 13 years.
