College Courses are Teaching Creative Thinking

As workplaces embrace creativity, college courses are adapting their courses to teach students the creative thinking they’ll need to succeed in the modern business world. This approach goes beyond arts degrees and extends to more unexpected courses, like CPAs and MBAs in finance, executive management, and healthcare.

Hugh Sherman, the dean of Ohio University’s College of Business, believes that students know that the workplace is undergoing changes. These students want to gain the right skills to become creative knowledgeable leaders and gain control of their careers.

Hot Desking Offices Encourage Creativity

 

Drab gray offices filled with cubicles are becoming a thing of the past as more companies opt for more creative layouts designed to fuel creativity. Hot desking, a free-range approach to office design which shuns assigned desks and encourages work in collaborative spaces, has become a popular alternative to a traditional office structure.

Collaboration fuels creativity, so organizations that use hot desking tend to be the most innovative. These include the leading financial firm Citi, the Australian real estate investment company GPT, and the tech firm Samsung, which has large outdoor collaborative spaces sandwiched between its office floors.

“The most creative ideas aren’t going to come while sitting in front of your monitor,” Samsung’s Scott Birnbaum said when explaining his company’s unique office design.

Offline and Online Idea Centers Encourage Shared Thoughts

In the past, whiteboards were just for meeting rooms. However, it’s becoming more common to see these easy-clean boards in a variety of office spaces. These whiteboards encourage employees from across the organization to put forward ideas in a format that suits them best, whether that’s traditional text, bullet points, or illustrations. As ideas can be added anonymously, these boards encourage shy employees to speak up.

The concept of the whiteboard has also gone digital with software like RealTimeBoard, Scribblar, and Padlet. These applications allow users to brainstorm with their co-workers and share new ideas no matter where they are.

Modern Workplaces Encourage Play

Traditionally there’s been a clear separation between work and play, but the lines are beginning to blur. Modern workplaces are beginning to resemble arcades with a host of facilities designed to get employees playing and boost their creative power.

Google is the poster child for this approach, with offices featuring Lego play stations, slides, and Razor scooters. There’s a slide at Corus Entertainment, a Canadian media firm, as well as foosball tables to inspire the creativity of its workforce. At the tech firm Atalassian, named Australia’s best workplace in a national survey of workers, employees can play table tennis, pool, and video and board games on-site.

Imagination is seen as an asset across a range of industries, and workplaces are reflecting that celebration of creativity.
